The NORC online survey with SEA science specialists asked about current state approaches being planned for assessing the three dimensions for science education framed by the NGSS with the goal of building standards-aligned assessments. The statements about state assessments being planned indicate the different types of items and tasks students will be asked to complete. For example, some states reported on an item cluster design, and other states described several components of a science assessment system. When asked about plans for a state science assessment system, five states reported that they have a science assessment system in place, while 17 states reported planning a science assessment system.
Content of New Science Assessments in State Plan, 2017-18
The reporting on science assessments for 2017-18 did not include specific indicators of alignment or how alignment is being measured, as for math assessments. This level of information will be collected and reported in subsequent annual reporting by NORC.
