One indicator of content alignment is the relationship of state-adopted standards for science and the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). The NORC reporting system checked on the current policy for state science standards and the relationship to NGSS as well as the National Research Council (NRC) Framework for K-12 Science Education. Information was reported through the NORC online survey or via review of state websites. Thus, as of the 2017-18 school year:
State science standards are the same as the NGSS in 16 states and DC.
- In 15 states, new science standards developed since 2013 were informed by the NGSS and the NRC Framework, with only minor revisions or additions.
- Thirty-four states reported basing their state science standards on the Framework for K-12 Science Education (NRC 2012).
- Thirty-five states reported adopting or developing new science standards since 2013.
